2 in 3 Australians adults are overweight or obese

I do not know about you, but for me this is a scary number. Think about this – a report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (Australian Institute article) states that 63% of adults and 25% of children are overweight or obese.

So for every 3 readers of this article, 2 people will be overweight or obese. The above report was in 2011-2012, so has this number changed? I have not found any recent data, however a quick search has shone the light on some more shocking numbers (huffingtonpost.com.au article).

  • 1 Australian develops type two diabetes every 5 minutes
  • 93% of Australians are not eating enough vegetables every day
  • Diabetes costs Australia $14.6 billion each year

It’s recommended to walk 10,000 steps per day, or actively walk 4 – 6 times per week by walking briskly for at least 30 minutes. A healthy lifestyle starts with your first step.
